«"Clay for the Table" is a two-day course focusing on the design and production of functional, thoughtfully crafted everyday ceramics. Stuart explores what makes a successful vessel in terms of form and function, and then provides detailed demonstrations of cups, jugs, bowls, and plates. He shares techniques honed over more than 20 years of practice. Known for his finely thrown stoneware and porcelain ceramics, he demonstrates how to throw efficiently, control hidden weight, and create precise, delicate rims.

The second day is dedicated to turning, handle making, and handle attachment, supplemented by further turning time and additional demonstrations. The aim is to gain a solid understanding of developing a cohesive dinner service with a distinctive style, a clear concept, and precise execution.

This course is suitable for advanced learners.

Stuart Carey originally comes from Newcastle upon Tyne and now lives and works in London. His creative journey began at the age of 14, when his art teacher at the time introduced him to ceramics. This early-discovered passion led him to a four-year ceramics training program with a subsequent BA at the Glasgow School of Art, followed later by an MA at the Royal College of Art in London.

Stuart gained international recognition with his elegant tableware collection, which he launched after graduating from the Royal College of Art. He received several awards for it, including “Designer of the Year,” and subsequently collaborated with renowned labels such as Conran, John Lewis, Calvin Klein, and actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

After some time, Stuart shifted his focus to education and founded one of the first freely accessible pottery studios in Great Britain. Today, he runs Kilnrooms in London, which he co-owns with Ben Cooper. Stuart is committed to promoting pottery and is also a lecturer at Central Saint Martins and a senior advisor on Channel 4's "The Great Pottery Throw Down".’

He is also the author of the book “From Clay to Kiln” which attempts to demystify ceramics for all levels of difficulty and make it accessible to all skill levels.
