Thomas Legler is a ceramist and architect with a studio in Zurich. His work operates at the intersection of craftsmanship and material research. It focuses on working with locally sourced clays and developing ceramic forms that combine precision and material understanding. In the SCALE-UP workshop, participants learn to work with up to 5 kg of clay on the pottery wheel. The focus is on creating medium to larger forms, resulting in bowls and vases. This workshop emphasizes understanding stability, achieving the desired wall thickness, and maintaining harmonious proportions.
During the first two days, centering larger amounts of clay and the
forming more complex structures are practiced. Control, balance, and rhythm are central. On the third day of the course, the objects are trimmed and refined. Overall, this course focuses mainly on repeated practice. Accordingly, only the 2 most successful objects will be bisque-fired at the end. However, if participants wish to fire additional objects, this is possible for an extra fee.
The glaze firing can be done independently by the participants or, alternatively, it can be done in our studio for an additional fee. The course is aimed at individuals who already have basic experience on the pottery wheel
but want to learn how to create larger forms precisely and safely. The goal is
to gain confidence in handling larger amounts of material and to develop one’s own
technique on the pottery wheel.
