«"Bootcamp" is an intense, high-energy course that helps you break free from habitual thought and work patterns and focus on fast, concentrated work. The goal is to build precision and speed through repetition. Stuart demonstrates the fundamentals of turning in detailed demonstrations, helping you reconnect with the core principles and strengthen your foundation.
Participants work on cylinders and bowls, completing timed exercises whose duration is gradually reduced to demonstrate what is possible without overthinking. The time is then increased again, allowing subsequent projects to benefit from everything learned. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to achieve significantly more in the same amount of time than at the beginning.
Stuart Carey originally comes from Newcastle upon Tyne and now lives and works in London. His creative journey began at the age of 14, when his art teacher at the time introduced him to ceramics. This early-discovered passion led him to a four-year ceramics training program with a subsequent BA at the Glasgow School of Art, followed later by an MA at the Royal College of Art in London.
Stuart gained international recognition with his elegant tableware collection, which was launched after graduating from the Royal College of Art. He received several awards for it, including “Designer of the Year”, and he subsequently worked with well-known labels such as Conran, John Lewis, Calvin Klein and the actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
After some time, Stuart shifted his focus to education and founded one of the first open-access ceramics studios in Great Britain. Today he runs the Kilnrooms in London, which he co-owns with Ben Cooper. Stuart is committed to promoting pottery and is also a lecturer at Central Saint Martin’s and lead consultant on Channel 4’s “The Great Pottery Throw Down”.
He is also the author of the book “From Clay to Kiln” which seeks to demystify pottery and make it accessible to all levels.
