Attua Aparicio – Glass On Ceramics

CHF 40.00

GLASS ON CERAMICS

As part of Zurich Design Weeks, Attua Aparicio invites participants to explore the creative dialogue between ceramics and glass. Participants will transform a pre-fired ceramic plate by combining it with coloured glass, experimenting with colour, texture, and material to create a unique object. Created in collaboration with our project partner, Suisse Langenthal, who have generously provided all the ceramic pieces, the workshop offers an approachable introduction to these two complementary materials. No previous experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

The objects are fired after the workshop, the results are exhibited together and are ready for collection after about 4 weeks.

Attua Aparicio Torinos is a designer and artist specializing in experimental material research within product design. Her work combines ceramics, glass, and hybrid material processes, embracing chance and perceived "mistakes" as creative potential. She studied Design Products at the Royal College of Art in London and is a co-founder of Silo Studio. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Design Museum London. In addition to her studio work, she teaches regularly at prestigious institutions such as Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art.

International ceramic residencies, including at the EKWC European Ceramic Workcentre and in Jingdezhen, China, profoundly influenced her practice. There, she further developed her research on the combination of ceramics and borosilicate glass. Her work emerges from an experimental process that explores material behavior and pushes the boundaries between craft, design, and material experimentation.

As part of this year's Zurich Design Weeks, Attua Aparicio invites everyone to a workshop open to all, exploring the creative possibilities at the intersection of ceramics and glass.

After a brief introduction, each participant decorates a pre-fired ceramic plate with colored glass elements. Designs can be developed directly on the plate or sketched on paper first. The glass pieces are then arranged and assembled into individual patterns, pictures, or abstract compositions. The focus is on playful experimentation with color, form, and material, as well as the joy of creating.

Before firing, the finished pieces are documented, and participants gain insight into the fusing process. After firing, the glass fuses permanently with the ceramic, transforming the designs into unique decorative objects. The workshop also demonstrates how the finished plates can be displayed as wall art.

This workshop is open to everyone and offers a straightforward, creative introduction to working with glass and ceramics. No prior knowledge is required.
