Andrea Roman is a Mexican ceramic designer based in London. Her work is characterized by colored clay, clean lines, and unglazed surfaces. In her practice, she explores contemporary functional ceramics through color, materiality, and composition, creating objects that exist at the intersection of function, architecture, and ritual.
She has collaborated with leading chefs; her work is available in independent shops and selected design stores that stand for craftsmanship, material-oriented practices and contemporary design.
In addition to her studio work, Andrea has over ten years of experience teaching ceramics and leading workshops. She is particularly interested in sustainability, collaborative work, and the relationship between handmade objects and everyday rituals.
As a special program of ZDW 26, this workshop invites participants to combine geometric collage and ceramics in an experimental and playful way. The starting point is a simple paper collage, which is then developed using bold colors and geometric forms. References from modern architecture, abstract painting, and graphic compositions are available for inspiration and can serve as visual prompts.
Guest mentor Andrea Roman gives a brief introduction to working with colored clay and demonstrates how graphic forms can be translated into ceramic surfaces. She focuses on composition, color relationships, patterns, and the importance of keeping the creative process intentionally open and surprising. Participants then work with colored layers of clay, cutting, layering, rolling, and assembling them to create individual ceramic panels.
A central aspect of the workshop is the transformation of the original collage: through the physical process of working with clay, shapes and lines change naturally. The designs become bolder, more tactile, and often unexpectedly different from the original template. It is precisely these small shifts and serendipitous occurrences that give the works their unique character.
The workshop is open to all experience levels and is aimed at beginners as well as people with design or ceramic experience. Children are welcome when accompanied by an adult.
The objects will be individually weighed at the end, and material and firing costs will be charged separately (CHF 35/kg).
