Meet the Maker*: Stephanie Misteli

Every month, one db pottery member fills our studio window with their own work. This month's Meet the Maker* is Stephanie.

Somewhere in Stephanie’s childhood home, there’s a bowl sitting on a shelf. She made it in primary school, and her mother has kept it to this day.

That bowl was the first beginning. The second came years later, at a ceramic painting table, when she looked up and realised she'd lost the whole afternoon. Then she thought, how hard could pottery on the wheel be? About three years ago she and her sister signed up for a pottery course together, and that was that. Pottery fever, no known cure.

Lately her attention in the studio has gone to porcelain, and to what happens when she blends it into stoneware in various quantities. Coarser speckles here. A smoother, creamier body there. The cups in the window this month are the results of that experiment: soft rounded forms in blush, sand, and pale greys, lined up until the whole row cascades as one long gradient. When looked closely one at a time, they're subtle. Together, they're a colour study.

They're CHF 40 each and available in the studio — come by Schiffbaustrasse 9a, hold a few, and take home the one that fits.

Stephanie's work fills the db pottery window through the end of August. More of her pieces can be found on Instagram: @atelierstephanie

This is what one course started three years ago. If you're wondering what comes after the course — that's what our studio membership is for: your own independent exploration with clay, your own creative oasis, and a community that values these too.

Hope to see you in the studio 🧡
