Stuart is originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne and now lives and works in London. His creative journey began at the age of 14 when his art teacher at the time introduced him to ceramics. This early passion led him to a 4-year ceramics course, followed by a BA at the Glasgow School of Art and later a MA at the Royal College of Art in London.
Stuart gained international recognition with his elegant tableware collection, which was launched after graduating from the Royal College of Art. He received several awards for it, including “Designer of the Year”, and he subsequently worked with well-known labels such as Conran, John Lewis, Calvin Klein and the actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
After some time, Stuart shifted his focus to education and founded one of the first open-access ceramics studios in Great Britain. Today he runs the Kilnrooms in London, which he co-owns with Ben Cooper. Stuart is committed to promoting pottery and is also a lecturer at Central Saint Martin’s and lead consultant on Channel 4’s “The Great Pottery Throw Down”.
He is also the author of the book “From Clay to Kiln” which seeks to demystify pottery and make it accessible to all levels.
Throwing thin:
Stuart is known for his „weightless“ pottery style. Over the past 20 years, he has honed his techniques to create objects of strength and beauty with great precision in very fine and delicate pieces. In this workshop, you will be shown techniques for „stretching“ the clay thin, a method Stuart uses in his practice and has developed through high-level production and teaching. The course focuses on bowls, upright vessels, and plates. Stuart will explain weight distribution in detail and the principles of throwing almost gravity-defying objects. This throwing method produces fine, refined pieces and is also an extremely economical production method, as almost all the clay is used in the throwing process; you will have very little trimming to do, thus reducing the overall time spent on the wheel. If you want to move away from heavy pots and develop the skills to make beautiful, delicate pieces, then this is the course for you!
A trimming session will be offered on Monday, May 26th.
In these two hours, Stuart will demonstrate quick and precise trimming methods. First, he'll explain the proper use of specific tools and show you how to make your own razor-sharp trimming tools practically for free. Then, he'll demonstrate how he trims his ceramics, where he leaves weights for practical reasons, and where to remove them. Finally, Stuart will show you how to seamlessly finish a pot, joining the inside and outside and achieving the perfect curves between the wall and the base.
