Meet the Maker: Teresa Venegoni
«Nöd ganz Hundert» – Not Quite a Hundred (Swiss for: a bit mad in the best way)
At db pottery studio, we love celebrating the beautifully personal journeys of our members, and for the month of August we’re thrilled to introduce you to Teresa Venegoni, whose window display is equal parts meticulous craftsmanship and playful experimentation.
«Nöd ganz Hundert» is craftsmanship, chemistry, aesthetics, curiosity—and yes, a good dose of perseverance. Her current series was born from what started as a planned tableware set. The twist? Nearly one hundred small plates, each featuring its own unique glaze combination.
What began as a plan for a tableware set, evolved into a full-on ceramic experience for Teresa, a fascinating dichotomy between structure and spontaneity. On one hand, it was a disciplined exercise: shaping nearly identical small plates on the wheel, a repetitive and focused training in form and technique. On the other hand, it became a space for pure experimentation, each plate glazed differently, with no two combinations alike. The result is a series bound by shape, but wildly diverse in surface and finish. A table set, turned glaze laboratory.
But like all good creative processes, this one came with its own challenges. Many of the black clay plates cracked during glaze firing. While this can be disappointing or even disheartening, it also offered a quiet lesson in letting go.
Her thoughtful and playful approach, equal parts technical and intuitive, is a reminder of how ceramics constantly teaches us to let go, stay curious, and keep experimenting.
Come by our Zürich ceramic studio to see Teresa’s “Nöd ganz Hundert” collection in the front window this month. If you missed it, don’t worry! You can still stop by the studio to see more of her work in person, or check out the current window display to discover the latest artist being featured.
