Decades before the name 'Magic Bay' came up, when Imsouane itself was barely known among surfers, a house with a unique view of the Imsouane bay was built. For more than 20 years, the regular guests of this special house have referred to it as the bay of waves and visions. A little secret known only to the purists. And your home during the surf and pottery retreat.

At a time when Imsouane was still a fishing village that was hardly known even among surfers, a house was built with a unique view of the bay of Imsouane.

The house was called 'Tayourt,' which among the local Berbers means both 'moon' and 'small wave.'

One of the oldest fishermen's houses in Imsouane, renovated with great attention to detail, using local materials and techniques such as tadelakt, bejmat floors and a thatched roof. All the furniture in the 6 rooms were handmade by Moroccan craftsmen and artists.

To the hosts

The host of the wonderful Fisherman's House in Imsouane is Hamid.

Away from mainstream surf tourism, it is important to him to provide a home for surfers, artists, and travelers in his small lodge, while also conveying their values and appreciation for nature, local culture, and art.

Surfing

The bay of Imsouane is known for having the longest wave in Morocco. The resort offers a choice of three spots: The Bay, The Reef and The Cathedral. It is therefore suitable for all skill levels.

Every day you will be coached for two hours by an experienced surf instructor. Hamid and his team will ensure your safety and help you improve your skills. With no more than five people per group, you can expect the best surfing experiences.

The material is included:
(Quicksilver Wetsuits, Softtops for beginners or TORQ Hardboard for advanced riders).

Pottery retreat: Pottery

The experienced ceramic artist and founder of db pottery studio, Denise Kratzer, will teach you various hand-building techniques. Every afternoon, or depending on the wave conditions, we will create works with our hands following old traditions.

Your creations will be fired and completed on-site. Mustapha from a nearby pottery studio will carefully pack your clay works and send them to Switzerland afterwards. We kindly ask all participants for some patience regarding this process in advance.

We will fly from Zurich to Agadir on Saturday with Edelweiss Air. The transfer to the hotel is included with this flight. The transfer takes about 2 hours from Agadir.

You can also fly to Marrakech. By car, it takes about 4 hours to Imsouane. You would need to organize the transfer yourself or let us know, and we can arrange for a driver. Denise is happy to share her tips for Marrakech. She knows Morocco, including Marrakech, very well.

Imsouane is located on the Moroccan Atlantic coast approx. 80 km (driving distance) north of Agadir or about 95 km south of Essaouira at altitudes between 0 and 250 metres. The hinterland is formed by the western foothills of the High Atlas-mountains. The climate is heavily influenced by the Atlantic, rain (approx. 260 mm/year) falls almost exclusively in the winter months.

The inhabitants of earlier times were exclusively Berberbut as a result of increasing modernisation (connection to the electricity, water and telephone networks) and the associated construction boom in the Agadir area, many newcomers have arrived from other regions of Morocco. One speaks mainly Moroccan Arabicbut also French and English; in the hinterland, however, the regional Berber dialect is still predominantly spoken.

Apart from its bathing and surfing beaches, Imsouane has no historically or culturally significant attractions. However, much has remained more original and simpler than in Agadir or Taghazout. In 2024, the authorities demolished illegal buildings, and at the moment, Imsouane appears more like a wasteland. This is something one should be aware of! They are currently in the process of rebuilding and regenerating everything.

You will need a valid passport to enter Morocco, which must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the return date.

The best time to travel is in spring, from March to May, or in autumn, from September to November, when the weather is mild and pleasant.

We recommend bringing warm clothing. It can get cool in the evenings. During the day, it is usually warm and sunny. Good sun protection is advised.
