This advanced pottery course is aimed at participants with prior experience who want to consciously develop their work on the potter's wheel. Over seven weeks, you will work continuously on more complex forms and vessels, refine your technique, and gain more confidence in handling materials and tools.
The focus is on precision and a nuanced eye for proportion, wall thickness, and tension within the form. You will engage more deeply with design, further develop your own approaches, and learn to harmonize form and function more clearly. You will also practice deliberately increasing the amount of clay to create different volumes.
The course offers space for individual questions and supports you in consolidating your technical foundation while further developing your personal design language.
The course units are structured as follows:
Week 1: Throwing and cutting open to individually check the wall thickness.
Week 2: Throwing and keeping for trimming/glazing.
Week 3: Trimming
Week 4: Throwing and cutting open to individually check the wall thickness.
Week 5: Working with larger quantities of clay – practicing above the usual limit, throwing and keeping for trimming/glazing.
Week 6: Trimming
Week 7: Glazing
Depending on your interests and individual focus, you will also work on topics such as:
Manufacturing and attaching handles, throwing and assembling multi-part objects, series production, and turning plates.
The course takes place once a week on a fixed weekday and lasts 3 hours each time.
At the end of the course, you can take home 10-12 pieces that you have made and fired yourself. Material and firing costs are included in the course fee.
